One of the most distinctive, rare and unique George Herriman Krazy Kat Sundays in existence!
Bidding ends Saturday 5:30 PST

Estimate: $30,000-35,000
Starting bid: $25,000

George Herriman original art Krazy Kat September 7th 1919
Much has been written about the genius that was Herriman, what can one add?  Herriman possessed that rare gift of being able to suspend reality. He was able to maintain readers interest in this original world for decades with the simplest of premises, as only genius can accomplish.  It begins with a cat which loves a mouse who in turn feels nothing but disdain for said cat and demonstrates his dislike by throwing bricks at the cat, who mistakes these missiles for tokens of love!  Throw in a “officer” who is constantly protecting the cat from the mouse and you have the makings of an eternal love triangle set against the beauty of the Arizona desert.

We are privileged to offer one of the most unique and recognizable examples in existence. Offered here is a Sunday example dated 9/7/1919, in which Krazy is invited by Ignatz to the “Fromage Festival” which turns out to be much "more" than Krazy bargained forWe will leave it to you to decipher the true intent of this page. This page is routinely featured in any and all anthologies, books or articles dealing with Krazy Kat. It is immediately recognizable and undeniably of museum quality.

A rare, hand colored George Herriman, Krazy Kat Saturday  March 4th 1922
Bidding ends Saturday 5:45 PST

Estimate: $70,000-80,000
Starting bid: $59,000

George Herriman original art Krazy Kat Saturday March 4th 1922

Offered here is a rare hand colored Saturday example.

From January 7 to March 11 1922, William Randolph Hearst introduced an experimental Saturday comics section in color that only appeared in the New York Journal.

The provenance on this page is impeccable as it came directly from legendary collector, publisher Bruce Hamilton who acquired it from the family when he represented them. At the time of purchase, the family stated that the page was hand colored by Herriman. The coloring may be different than a presentation piece as this is a rare SATURDAY page and was colored to indicate how it should be printed. There are 2 known Saturday pages with the same provenance both are similarity hand colored.  Herriman lived and worked in New York, presumably working at the syndicate offices or visiting them almost daily until 1922 when he moved to CA. As this page was published on March 4th 1922 and it was a new endeavor it would have been drawn and submitted much earlier.

Background:
Due to the major increase in attendance and the associated demands at the San Diego Comic Con, it has become increasingly difficult to both service convention clientele  and administer a traditional auction. As a result, this year we are offering  original art, comic books and related collectibles on a “direct sale” basis at the show.

However,  there are high profile items either due to their significance or by consignor request, that will be offered on a modified auction basis. There are no buyer's premium on these items.  Zero commission to buyer!

We will accept "bids" at the show both from clients live and via email in a private auction format. Clients Interested in an individual item(s) will be apprised of the current high bids as they arrive, via email.  The highest offer received by Saturday 7-26-2008, at the assigned closing times listed below, will be declared the “winner”. To give everyone a fair opportunity, there will be a 3 minute rule in effect. Bidding will continue until 3 minutes pass with no bids on an item then the item is declared “sold”.
